Lauren Miller

This is my first assignment for my Ed. Collaborative High Impact Instruction. I decided to add it to my website, because I need to be aware of how I prefer to learn in order to better teach those who learn differently. This will help keep me accountable by keeping me aware of all learning types.

A Little more about Me!

Not Your Average Mathematician

I grew up in Virginia, and moved to Wisconsin as an early teen.

I received my Bachelor's in Mathematics from Carthage College in Kenosha, WI.

I moved to St. Louis, MO in 2015, and received my Master's in Mathematics from Saint Louis University in 2017.

I've always considered myself a left-brain and right-brain person.

I come from a very theatrical family, so where did the love of math come from?

I love art, but I also love structure. Math gave me structure, whereas in art there are just too many options. (I always have at least 5 different craft/sewing projects going on at once.)

I am notorious for to-do lists and notes, which is why this page is in list-ish form. (This project was even on a to-do list!)

The jobs I have had have always been important to me. I have always chosen jobs that push me to learn more. I have been (and still am) an American Board of Opticianry certified Optician.

After the trauma of teaching math while still in Graduate school I decided to take a break and turn my eye towards working for a a non-profit. I have always loved volunteering and wanted to give back. I was an accounting intern for an opera, worked for the Saint Louis Public Library in their science and technology department, and even tried my hand at development for child literacy.

This lead me to realize that I really did want to teach math, to anyone who would let me. I have adjuncted at Saint Louis University, Lindenwood University and Fontbonne University. I am currently an adjunct at Fontbonne.

A Few of my Favorite
MidCentury Everything
I love the 50's and 60's. My entire home is decorated this way.
In no particular order...

The Missouri Botanical Garden is a great place to see and smell!

I love to learn interesting facts every day. Most of the podcasts I listen to are educational.
My 5 year-old truffle bobcat. Loves plastic bags more than me.

Introvert or Extrovert?
I'm not quite sure!

I love all theatre and museums, mostly as an opportunity to Learn. I am an Opera Evangelist to everyone I meet!

I also love to sew clothing for myself, and will try any craft or DIY I can think of. I am resourceful and when I find furniture someone is throwing away I take it home and rehab it!

Finally, I participate in PinUp contests as Millie Manhattan. I've always loved 50's clothing and have gotten to meet an amazing group of supportive and inspiring women this way.

I  do personally have to work in order to not always take charge.

Intrapersonal - prefers to work alone

My Favored Learning Enviroment

The Library

I need a very quiet place, where I can only accomplish the things I need to do on my to-do list and not get distracted from my homework. The Central Library Branch of the St. Louis Public Library is my happy place!
